Dear Mr. President

Dear Mr. President,

This is not a political letter. It’s not an attempt to attack what you’ve done wrong or praise what you’ve done right. It’s not a way to give you pointers, advice or tell you how much better you could do. I don’t have a brilliant idea on how to improve the economy, reduce pollution or lower the price of oil. How I vote, how liberal or conservative I am and my opinion on politics are all completely irrelevant.

You don’t know me and it’s a pretty safe bet that you’ll never even hear my name. I’m an everyday American. Just another face in the crowd. I’ve grown up knowing I could be anything I dreamed of. I still believe Sunday is for church and Monday night is for football. I don’t believe freedom of speech should be viewed as an invitation to be disrespectful, rude or mean. I’ve stood in awe in front of the Declaration of Independence, Gettysburg and the Vietnam Memorial. I vote. I don’t litter and I’ve donated blood. I cover my heart when I hear the Star Spangled Banner. I understand that Thanksgiving is about a lot more than turkey and Memorial Day is a lot more than barbecues. I have a husband, three kids, two dogs and a cat. As I said, an everyday American.

In our house, you are more than just the President. You are, also, the “Big Boss”. Every day, my husband laces up his boots and is proudly ”Army Strong”.  He works hard, serves with pride and has mastered the art of carrying on. You also do not know him and it’s a pretty safe bet you’ll never hear his name, either.  He’s a good one but I know he’s only one of  thousands. You can’t be expected to know even a fraction of them. Believe me though when I say, he’s a great one to have on your team.

He’ll go where you tell him, when you tell him. He’ll do the job you ask and he’ll only come home when you let him. He’ll do his best, he’s not built to do it any other way. I won’t ever ask you not to make him go. It will break my heart when he does but it’s his job. I won’t ask for more time, a better assignment or a different location. After all, it’s what he chooses to do and following him is what I choose to do.

This letter really isn’t about the dedication of my husband, though. I’m writing you to ask a favor of you. Every night, I pray for wisdom, knowledge and guidance for you. I pray that God guides you as you guide our country. All I’m asking from you, is that you pray for strength, courage and safety for him (and the thousands of others like him). In your position, I understand that they are “The Troops” but believe me, they are much more than that to those who love them.  Please don’t forget that and pray for them just as I pray for you.

Thank you,

An Army Wife
